Historical Background:
The Huashan 1914 Creative Park is a major cultural and creative complex located in Taipei’s Zhongzheng District, originally built in 1914 as the Taipei Winery during the Japanese colonial period. After decades of industrial use producing rice wine, fruit wine, and camphor products, the site was abandoned in 1987 due to urban and environmental changes. Beginning in 1999, it was repurposed into an arts and cultural space for exhibitions, performances, and creative activities, eventually reopening in 2005 as a revitalized cultural park. Today, it preserves its historic industrial architecture while serving as one of Taipei’s key venues for arts, events, and tourism, featuring galleries, performance spaces, shops, cafés, and restaurants.

Our Journey:
I have been to Huashan 1914 Park a few times, but I have only really gone to see exhibits there once. There are lots of wide open spaces here, and I often see crowds here when passing by. I am glad that the city has restored this historic area and put it to good use for the public to enjoy.

Here I was trying to get a good view of the place with the smokestack, but instead I got a great view of garbage bags. Sorry for the lazy photography.

A few years ago, I wrote about the smokestack at Huashan because I was writing about the extant smokestacks in Taipei leftover from its Japanese industrial era. You can read more about the smokestack in this blog here. Some of the smokestacks in that blog have since been destroyed.

When you first enter Huashan, you are greeted by this large, grassy area.

Usually, you can see quite a few young people hanging out here in front of the historic buildings.

Looking back at Taipei, you can see an ad for Godzilla Minus One.

There are usually quite a few exhibits here, such as this one for Miffy.

Another view of the middle of Huashan.

Science Factory exhibit.

There are also a few shops in the park, such as “Inspiration Corner” pictured here.

Another arts and craft shop in the park.

Historic hallway.

New, modern hallway.

Magix Box is an immersive exhibit experience you can check out.

Here you can also see the distinctive warehouses covered in vines.

There is something beautiful about these warehouses becoming one with nature.

Wider view of the area.

The main reasons we came that day were for Doraemon and Tomica.

Okay, mostly for Tomica.

They also had a Tomica museum. The photo above is all the Taiwan-related Tomica cars ever made. We bought the post office set.

You can check out more photos from the Tomica exhibit in the gallery above. Overall, we had a good time, and had endless Tomica toy cars to choose from.
