Historical Background:

Founded in 2004 in Kaohsiung, Taiwan, Modern Toilet Restaurant began as a creative ice cream concept inspired by reading Doraemon in the bathroom, featuring chocolate soft-serve shaped like poop served in toilet-style bowls. Originally named MARTON Theme Restaurant, it quickly gained attention for its humorous, bathroom-themed décor and dishes designed to resemble feces or vomit. In 2006, all branches were renamed Modern Toilet Restaurant, and the brand expanded across Taiwan (with about 13 locations at its peak) as well as to Hong Kong and Shenzhen, becoming known for its playful, unconventional dining experience. However, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, all of its restaurants had closed except for the Shilin location. In 2024, the Ximen Location opened once again, making for a total of two restaurants in Taiwan, both located in Taipei.

Our Journey:

I have been to Modern Toilet once, shortly after the pandemic, when the Shilin location was the last restaurant left in Taiwan. I was happy to learn later that the Ximen location had reopened. We took the MRT to Shilin station and walked over to the restaurant.

View from Shilin Station.

The location is not that far from Shilin Night Market, and the area is very busy.

Part of Shilin Night Market peaks out from a nearby alleyway.

We finally made it to the modern toilet poo-poo restaurant.

There is a cute little stairway here to the main eatery.

Main eating area, with toilets for seats and a ball pit.

Poo-shaped pillows.

There is more poop in bowls under the glass tables.

The funnest part about this restaraunt is the ball pit.

But basically the ball pit is just for taking selfies.

Let’s take a bath!

Dessert items on the menu.

Poopy ice cream.

The total bill for a family of four came out to this.

Poopy drink.

Ducky noodles.

Poopy fried pork steak.

Half-eaten poop.

And there is also a small gift shop here where you can buy all your poop-themed merchandise.

We bought a small plunger.

Overall, it was a fun experience, and we got some cool photos. But I would not want to eat here every day. There is a reason that it went from 13 shops to two: after you have it once, there is not much incentive to come back. The prices are a bit high, and the food is okay. The obvoius long-term strategy for this chain is to try to attract stupid foreign tourists like me.

And before we left, we saw this cannabis shop? (cannabis is illegal in Taiwan)

Shilin Night Market 士林夜市
